Filer la lettre

The term "Filer la lettre" means to draw a legible and harmonious letter, by first tracing its lines and indicating its outlines. Today, the expression "to paint a letter" is more commonly used.

The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the epigraphic heritage of painted letters. I describe the versatility of street lettering. I explain that painted letters are often relevant because they have something essential about them. I also show the evolution of the profession of letter painter, which is now both a craft and a conceptual approach to design. In this dissertation, I show that if we want to preserve this heritage, we need to show it off, tell its story and share it !
